Wedding Gift Registries in India: Thoughts?

So you are tying the knot , and the last thing you want is to receive a Roti maker on your wedding day (hey it happens!) Typically , in today's world you would tell your friends what you need for your new home and if they are nice enough, you would walk into your home with a brand new flat screen TV (or whatever else it is you asked for).
The question is- Would you be comfortable with having gift registry system in India?
For those unaware with registries, the way it works is that you set up a website outlining the products you need for your wedding. Your guests can contribute to buying you these items or just contribute cash. On one hand its a simple, easy way to get the stuff you really want. On the other hand your parents are going to raise more than a few eyebrows about specifically 'asking' for gifts. Cos you know - yr supposed to smile and politely refuse gifts atleast at face value ;) We think gift registries may start to come in , in a big way somewhere down the line if not now. But would be interesting to compare notes on how many of you have actually used a registry system in India or would want to use it?
