Winter weddings are always the best time to tie the knot, especially when you have scorching summers like India. While the weather ensures your bridal makeup and hair stay as is, it can be freezing cold if you want to wear backless cholis and strappy blouses. So how do you keep cosy without being bundled away? We asked expert fashion stylists on what they would recommend as the best silhouttes you can don for your upcoming winter nuptials!

For the winter I would recommend silhouettes with jackets. It could be a jacket blouse with a saree or even a jacket kurta with a lehenga. It’s something that keep you warm and looks super stylish at the same time. Ruffles are my next favourite which add the glam quotient to any outfit!

Stylist Varsha Harlalka says

I absolutely love winter weddings. I myself got married during Dilli ki Thandi. It was beautiful - no stress about getting sweaty with all the heavy outfits and no anxiety about oily forehead. Long sleeves (full or even below elbow) is the biggest open secret to a winter wedding. It looks elegant and plus saves you from the chills. Kurti blouse with Sharara/Garara is another really good option to opt for chilly winters. It looks regal and grand plus you can always add an under layer. If it is a really chilly winter and you still want to wear your little choli or a short sleeve - add a thermal underneath your skirt or Lehenga or even cut a thermal short and wear it under the blouse. It might not sound romantic but it definitely helps you fight the chills. Adding a shawl or a velvet dupatta as a second later is a great idea without compromising with your outfit overall. It looks beautiful and elegant. Even a silk dupatta draped like a shawl looks absolutely regal. Jacket is another really good piece to add for the brides who want to do something hatke. Get a beautiful benarasi or velvet or any silk jacket with some embroidery and add it to your bridal lehenga or saree. It looks fun and you can always reuse it for any other winter weddings that you will be attending. There are no rules for what you “should” wear at your own wedding. Wear what you love and feel comfortable with. But make sure to keep yourself warm. You don’t want to wake up with a sore throat and a cold the next morning.

There is something so gorgeous about white weddings in an Indian way. A cream or off-white lehenga with intricate and ancient Indian embroideries in gold like salma-sitara, mukaish and gotapatti. A full flare lehenga, like a JJ valaya or Rohit Bal is a classic. I would pick a full sleeve churidar/backless blouse with a full ghera lehenga or a gharara with a slightly longer (kurta) blouse, like from the house of Kotwara. While jewel tones are always great for end of the year weddings- and I am particularly partial to designs by Rimple and Harpreet, Anju Modi, as they spell true Indian wedding glam!

Stylist Prema Patil says

My current favourite silhouette for winter weddings is embroidered embellished shawls! You can wear it with a plain silk suit that almost changes the entire look. It makes it perfect winter weddings. Full sleeves Anarkali is just perfect and never goes out of the style, especially benarasi ones. Angrakhas are an another beautiful silhouette you can wear it for engagement or mehendi. You can also go for a velvet or silk lehengas for this winter with an embroidered jackets or a crop top with full sleeves. Velvet or silk will add warmth making it look a perfect bridal look for mehendi or reception

For winter weddings, keep your backless cholis and low neck blouses aside, a lehenga or saree with a high neck matching blouse and full sleeves or 3/4th sleeves will look ultra-glamorous and regal. Indulge in thicker fabrics like velvet and raw silk. For functions that are held in the open, which then avoids addition of any cardigans or sweaters over your bridal outfit. Adding two dupattas to your outfit is another way of staying warm at your wedding. Choose an embellished velvet dupatta or a beautiful pashmina stole that can be draped over your lehenga and another lighter one as a veil. Opt for dense weave garments like dupon silk sarees, or jacquard Benarasi sarees to help keep you warm during all the festivities. Layering is a good option if you want to be able to re-use your outfit in future. Most of the couture fashion shows now incorporate layering in different ways using jackets and capes on sarees and lehengas.

Stylist Priyanka Mehra says

A silhouette which would be suitable for a winter wedding is a sleeved blouse. Sleeved blouses can stand out and create a statement while looking extremely sensual. Take a cue from Priyanka Chopra's Red Sabyasachi lehenga which had people all across the world gushing over the style. Make sure that the blouse is bejewelled or embellished, coordinate it well with a heavy lehenga, or an embellished saree. Another option you can opt for is layering through the use of jackets and capes. The jackets can be in the style of open trench jackets, embellished shrug-like jackets, the blazer jacket, the options are plenty. These jackets create an Indo-western appeal. The coverage can give you the required warmth and make you look perfectly stylish.
