Every community has a set of fun rituals at their weddings. In fact, many communities have the same rituals but it is done differently by infusing some of their flavor and fun. One such is the Maala Maathal or the garland exchange ceremony of TamBrahm weddings.

A garland exchange is a part of every Indian wedding. In a Tam Brahm wedding, the garland exchange ceremony takes place with so much fun and frolic- this is done before the Kanya Daan and Muhurtham on the day of the wedding.

So what happens at the Maalai Maathal ceremony that it becomes a legit competition? Well, the bride and groom and lifted by their maternal uncles(in most cases friends, brothers too) and they try to land the maalai/garland perfectly. This has to be done at least thrice before the ceremony is completed and the oonjal ceremony starts.

We just love the fun and joy in all these images and we stress these candid shots as they would make for an interesting spot in your wedding album.

Are you hearing or humming the famous “ Maalai Mathinal” song which is the anthem of this ceremony? This beautiful song talks about the garland exchange ceremony where the bride and groom are perceived as gods incarnate and are rejoiced by one and all.

We have a few things to say here. Make sure those who carry you are fine with it and hold on to you. With all the moving there is a fair chance you might slip. (have seen this happen) . So get someone to have a basic sprain band and some spray just in case.

For those of you who are attending a Tam Brahm wedding soon, and would love to see this fun ceremony- this happens after the Kaashi Yatra and before the Oonjal ceremony. So plan it right!
