A Quaint, South Indian wedding in Mumbai

BY The WMG Bride | 25 Jul, 2014 | 13445 views | 4 min read

We can spot a Mumbai wedding from a mile away- they always have this fuss free, easy going vibe about them that resonates with the city itself. In this particular wedding, love the seafoam green floor length cocktail outfit which is uber cute, the contrast of the edgy smokey eyes with the traditional kanjivaram, and the grins on the couples faces . These two look like two adorable kids tieing the knot! Featuring  fab makeup by the talented Priya Todarwal , and shot by Seventy by Two.

Meet Divya and Vardhan

Divya recounts "Vardhan and I first met when we were in kindergarten in Mumbai at Bombay Scottish School. We studied in the same class through school. We weren’t friends or anything but just class mates. We lost touch after school and a couple of years ago we just happened to cross paths and that’s where our relationship pretty much began."

From the bride: "My wedding was a fusion between a Kerala style and a GSB Konkani style wedding . We made sure the wedding atmosphere had significant representation from both sides  in terms of music, food, colours, décor. The music for example really set in the south Indian elements with the typical south indian drum beats and shehnai music. The food was a mix of kerala food like avial, rasam, payasam as well as very typical Maharashtra Konkani delicacies such as kotambeer vadi, solkadi etc.

The décor we picked was the traditional orange and white theme which is the marigold and rajnigandha considering our ceremonies and outfits etc were so traditional.  Some of the ceremonies at the wedding were very unique and one would say cute. For example, there’s a ceremony where the bride sits on her mother’s in law lap and together they look into a mirror. This signifies the mother in law welcoming Lakshmi into the house. Another one was where the bride’s brother twists the groom’s ear telling him to take care and look after his sister.

For my wedding, I was certain that I wanted to go all out South Indian and look every bit like a south indian bride with the bold lined eyes, the long braid and the kanjeevaram sarees. And with the help of Priya  and her team we were able to achieve that look. For the wedding, I went to Bangalore for my kanjeevaram saree shopping.  According to GSB Konkani traditions, the groom’s side of the family gift me  5 wedding sarees and for the different ceremonies I had the option of changing into these sarees during the ceremony. So throughout the wedding ceremony I wore 3 Kanjeevaram Sarees. I bought these sarees from a Silk Store called Varamahalakshmi  (Bangalore). For my mehendi and my reception, I changed it up with a lehenga and then an Indo-western gown for the cocktail "
