If you take a walk through the cramped lanes of Delhi’s Chandani Chowk aka Bridal Mecca, you’ll stumble upon at least five brides-to-be scouting for either “that Kareena lehenga” or “Sonam's mint green Dolly ki doli outfit”. If you’re as fascinated by brides from our movie industry as we at WMG are, it’s time to look at some of the most exquisite Indian bridal looks that have graced the silver screen. Though we do think its time B-town steps up the styling a notch, here are some note worthy moments for brides on screen.
1. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - Jodha Akbar
WMG loves: The royal Rajput bride’s dazzling head gear, over-whelming kundan jewellery, and intricate lehenga design made every girl want to dress up as a bride from the Mughal era.
Steal it: Wear a borla instead of a maang tikka as a bride!
2. Kareena Kapoor - 3 idiots
WMG loves: Full-sleeved blouses FTW! Not just that, the fiery combination of pink, red and burnt orange is not something you see every day, do you? This refreshing yet traditional look is a total thumbs up.
Steal it: Get an anarkali with a front slit for your Anand Karaj!
3. Kalki Koechlin- Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani
Start at 1.40 to see Kalki's bridal tranformation
WMG loves: Kalki's modern take on traditional outfits. While Kalki chose a Sabya both for her Sangeet and wedding day looks, by keeping the accessories minimal, the draping of the dupatta modern and the blouse short, she made for a completely contemporary bride.
Steal it: The bridal entry- with fairylights hanging from the regular phoolon ki chaadar.
4. Kajol – My Name is Khan
WMG loves: If simplicity could take up the form of a person, Kajol in My Name is Khan would rule the roost. An off-beat albeit modest choice for a wedding, Kajol’s red saree and minimal makeup is where our heart is at. But this one's for a modest second wedding - good stuff!
Steal it: The makeup - smokey eyes and nude lips are a great alternative for older brides!
5. Alia Bhatt – 2 States
WMG loves: The total transformation of the typical South-Indian bride! It’s when she walks up the stairs, unveiling her look bit-by-bit that we lost our minds! Three years and we’re yet to get over how Alia’s look was not just a tornado of kanjeevaram, and had hints of chiffon and minimal embroidery.
Steal it: The simple coin jewellery and the gorgeous fabrics with minimal embellishment.
6. Sonam Kapoor – Dolly ki Doli
WMG loves: Well, the sophisticated nose pin and breath-taking makeup, for starters! Sonam gave us 16 bridal looks in the movie, but this, according to us, stood out the most simply because of how regal she looked as a Muslim bride. If there’s one thing we learned from the look, it’s that sometimes, it’s okay to not add a pop of colour. And the passa was really the showstopper!
Steal it: The old world nizami jewellery thats been layered is a fabulous idea.
7. Alia Bhatt- Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania
WMG loves: Powder pink with bright red! We adore the understated makeup of DP in this one, and the fact that the look is so easily replicable; just make sure you pick a classy, intricate red dupatta to complete your bridal ensemble. Also, brownie points for adding a hint of golden jewellery (or is it kundan?) on a silver-embroidered lehenga.
Steal it: The fun, flirty hairdo's and the sweet milkmaid braids.
8. Nargis Fakhri – Rockstar
WMG loves: The fact that Nargis Fakhri looked nothing short of “Kashmiraculous” (sorry)! Bollywood hasn’t witnessed a lot many Kashmiri brides, and seeing Nargis slay her onlookers in this fashion was, indeed, a whiff of fresh air. She reminds us of Mumtaz Mahal. And, we don’t know why. :/
Steal it : Go simple on your lehenga and let your dupatta be the showstopper
