5 Reputed Fashion Stylists Tell Us: The Biggest Styling Mistakes Brides Make!

BY Latha Sunadh | 28 Mar, 2017 | 8664 views | 4 min read

Lehenga, check. Makeup, check. Accessories, check. If it's one mistake brides make on their big day, it's the way they style their look. They might have access to the best MUAs and wear the latest in trend from Sabya but it's putting together that look that really stands out. So we asked 5 reputed stylists in India to tell us the one mistake brides make so you could keep these pointers in mind!

Ayesha Nigam, Senior stylist at Harpers Bazaar Bride India says:  The big mistake brides really make? Thinking that they need to buy that really expensive (also very very uncomfortable) designer shoe to go with their big designer lehenga. They often forget that they have to wear these shoes for at least 10 hours. And no one ends up seeing it anyway under the lehenga. I think, it's better to wear comfortable shoes that you can dance the night away in! Priyanka Kapadia, Senior Fashion Editor at Vogue India says:  I think the biggest mistake most brides make is that they try so hard to look 'different' - being yourself is the most important on your big day. Remember that less is more and the simpler you keep your elements and accessories, the better you look! It's very easy to get lost under the million elements. Divyak D'Souza, Freelance Celebrity Stylist says: I think by and large most brides these days are quite aware of what to do to shine bright on their big day. But two words are usually a deal breakers - make-up and hair. Always remember to look like the best version of you, rather than a shouty beauty look. You don't want your kids cringing at your wedding photos down the years. So tone that makeup and balance it out rather than to copy a runway trend that doesn't suit you.

Amandeep Kaur, Fashion Stylist with Cosmopolitan India says:   Indian Brides tend to weigh themselves down under multiple layers of heavy embroidery and fabric. For eg: they'll wear an embellished blouse with a super embellished Ghagra, with a dupatta going across and a dupatta on the head. And after all this, there will be 4 layers of necklaces, heavy earrings, and much more on their body, all at the same time. I feel, sure, it's your wedding day and you want to wear everything that a bride should wear - from a maang tika to a nath. But be cautious of the amount of jewellery and embellishment in fabrics you are planning to wear. You don't want to weigh a million pounds. My advice: Ladies, just go for a trial run with your outfit and jewellery, and make sure you have enough breathing space around your neck. Go for a minimal blouse since there are going to be lots of things coming over it anyways. If wearing a heavy multi-tear necklace, then go for small earrings. If going for a big maang tika, then go for a small nath, or none at all. Keep the dupatta on your head the lightest, with just the right amount of embellishment to make it look special enough, without having to weigh a lot. Just remember it's your wedding day, make sure, you enjoy each moment of it, you should be able to dance, eat, walk around easily without feeling weighed down and dying under costume pressure. Spardha Malik, Digital Fashion Editor at Ogaan India  My biggest pet peeve is when brides cake on the makeup for their big day forgetting the weather and time of the day. Summers need a light, glow-from-within look. You don't have to put on the falsies or wear excessive highlighter for a day function. Also with excessive jewellery and an ornate lehenga, your makeup should be more natural to balance it all out.
I find so many brides looking rather overwhelmed with a massive matha patti. You have to keep in mind your face shape, the size of your forehead, the hairstyle you're comfortable with and then opt for the right mathapatti. It's totally fine to wear a small one/swap it with a dainty maang tika if that's what works for your face.
