WedMeGood, India’s leading wedding planning platform, has released a new survey highlighting a notable shift in how couples are meeting their life partners in 2024. The survey of over 120 newlywed couples reveals that 30% of Indian couples now find love online through dating apps, matrimonial websites, and social media. Despite this digital trend, traditional methods such as family introductions, social gatherings, and workplace connections continue to be significant, demonstrating a blend of tradition and modern technology in today’s matchmaking landscape.
Despite this digital shift, 60% of couples still meet through traditional offline methods, including workplace, family introductions, and social gatherings.
A Closer Look at Matchmaking Styles
Millennials prefer dating apps for their control, variety, and ease of use, with 15% using them. In contrast, only 6% of Gen Z engage with dating apps; they are more inclined to find love via social media, with 13% connecting through DMs and 9% using matrimonial apps. Meanwhile, only 4% of millennials meet via social media, and 12% through matrimonial sites. This shift reflects generational preferences, with Gen Z valuing the informal, lifestyle-driven nature of social media, while Millennials appreciate the structured approach of dating apps.
Online dating presents challenges, with 40% of respondents concerned about security issues like fake profiles and scams. Additionally, 36% struggle with maintaining consistent communication, leading to issues with expectations and intentions. Newer relationship dynamics such as “ghosting” and “situationships” are more prevalent and pose unique challenges for both Gen Z and Millennials.
Millennials vs. Gen Z: Key Differences in Courtship
Millennials generally prefer longer courtships focused on shared beliefs and long-term compatibility, whereas Gen Z favors shorter courtships (6-12 months) and prioritizes lifestyle compatibility.
While financial stability remains a factor, it is less critical compared to lifestyle preferences and family approval, with 73% of respondents still involving their families in the decision-making process.
Commenting on the Survey, Mehak Sagar Shahani, Co-Founder, WedMeGood, said: "The growing popularity of social media as a matchmaking tool reflects a generation in India that prioritizes shared lifestyles and social connections, opting for a more casual approach to finding love compared to traditional dating apps. At the same time, the sustained relevance of matrimonial platforms highlights how digital innovation and traditional values are merging. At WedMeGood, we see this evolution firsthand, where technology and family involvement come together, not only in matchmaking but also in wedding planning."
As online matchmaking continues to reshape the landscape, it will be intriguing to watch how digital platforms and traditional methods coexist and evolve, offering couples more diverse paths to finding love.
