The Ambanis with their never ending pre-wedding ceremonies have become quite meme-worthy. But let's tell you guys, now, finally the actual pre-wedding celebrations have begun- yes, the ones right before the wedding is to take place and not months in advance. So the itinerary for their actual wedding, which is happened on July 12 at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai is, reportedly, as follows:

  • July 3rd: Mamedu or Mosadu
  • July 5th: Sangeet
  • July 8th: Grah Shanti Pooja
  • July 10th: Pre-wedding event
  • July 12th: Wedding

The first set of photos have come out, and while the whole family was dressed to the nines (as usual), the question on everyone's lips is, what is a Mameru ceremony? So we decided to break it down in easy terms for the uninitated, (and of course, non-Gujaratis!)

What is a Mameru Ceremony?

So the word Mameru is derived from the word Mama, which refers to the maternal uncle. It is also called a Mosalu ceremony, and is very similar to a Punjabi 'Chunni Chadana' or Rajasthani 'Bhaat Nyotna' ceremony, although the person gifting would be different. The Gujarati Mosalu is the tradition where the groom's mother's family blesses the happy couple and showers them with gifts and offerings. In the Anant-Radhika wedding, it was Nita Ambani's relatives who gifted the couple with sweets, clothes and jewellery.

It is the gifts which are known as Mameru, which according to tradition symbolise love and affection. The couple in turn touch the feet of the elders to take their blessings. Traditionally, this is held to include the extended family in the celebrations and the wedding as a part of it rather than just being invited as guests.

We are sure the gifts exchanged at this particular Mameru must be like no other! While we wait to find out more details about it, let's stay tuned for more details about the biggest, fattest Indian wedding to come through!
