Nothing like a minimalistic bride to make a random day, a winner, right? And it's also been a while since we got a wedding from the city of joy, Kolkata so we are over the moon. Priya and Monil's wedding is just so chic we are still recovering from gazing repeatedly at her grey-beige lehenga by Sabyasachi. The jewellery was super simple and the decor was vintage so it was dreamy all the way.  Taj Bengal & The Park Hotel made for a wonderful space while Ekta Sharma at Krafted Knots★ 5  did all the planning beautifully. The cherry on the cake is obviously Malvika Periwal Photography★ 5  who made sure every little romantic aspect was captured to the hilt.

Meet Monil & Priya

"I met Monil in the autumn of 2008, when we were both freshers' starting out at medical school at Imperial College, and it was a truly exciting time for us. We had unprecedented independence, all of Central London at our doorstep and limitless enthusiasm and energy. We lived in adjoining halls of residence which meant we shared the same group of friends, attended all the same events and failed to attend most of our first-year medical school lectures! (Shhh...)

Although 6 years of university studies did fly by, the shared, happy memories of that time will remain etched in our lives forever.

Monil proposed over Christmas in 2016 in Brussels which was truly lovely. The setting of Belgian Christmas markets, the crisp winter air, and fabulous chocolates made it extremely romantic and we savored every precious moment of the occasion" says Priya.

From The Bride:

Having grown up in Kolkata, it was there that I had always wanted to get married and  Taj Bengal seemed the perfect choice due to its' prime location, renowned hospitality, and delectable food. We had a morning wedding in the Crystal Hall. It was a mix of traditional Bengali and Gujarati customs. The decor was done entirely by Romit’s team at Baisakhi’s. I didn’t want the venue to look unnecessarily busy but loved the idea of a floral chandelier made of tuberoses at the mandap.

The Cocktail Party was at Aqua, The Park Hotel. We had chosen two signature cocktails for the party. ‘Primonito’ - ( Priya Monil Mojito) which was a twist on the original mojito, with an infusion of Gandharaj ( traditionally Bengali) lemons. The second was ‘Honey, I Do’ - Honey, ginger, a splash of orange and gin. Heartfelt speeches by family and friends was followed by our first dance to ‘Can’t take my eyes off you’ (we had taken four hours of private dance lessons in London prior to this first public dance appearance, to try and overcome the potentially embarrassing issue of two left feet!) We also had a Belgian chocolate wedding cake with figurines of a surgeon in scrubs and a bride with a stethoscope as the cake toppers.

The wedding reception theme was a Parisian Garden, and we had a floral backdrop with almost 18,000 flowers made by the team at Baisakhi’s. We had a string quartet playing western classical music to enhance the European ambiance.

As for outfits, I wore Sabyasachi for all three events. As a Bengali bride, it seemed like the most appropriate option. I’m not an enthusiast of traditional red bridal hues so opted for something a bit different- a champagne colored lehenga.I wore a beige Sabyasachi evening gown for the cocktail party and a pink Sabyasachi sari for the wedding reception the following evening.

Monil wore a sherwani in navy blue by Shantanu & Nikhil. (Interestingly, we had taken Monil’s sherwani measurements over FaceTime as he was unable to come to Kolkata before the wedding. One could clearly see the visible relief on everyone's faces when it turned out to be a perfect fit!).

A few tips that I can offer brides on planning:
⁃Start planning early
⁃Try and enjoy every moment (although this is easier said than done!)
⁃Do background research on everything you want and on all the different vendors. Like everything else in life, making an informed decision is always the best way forward! I have to admit, that without the recommendations and advice of many of my Kolkata ‘Loreto House' school friends who had recently got married, I would have really struggled to find them.
