Registering your marriage is not as straight and simple as it appears- there's paperwork to fill, appointments to take, and most importantly, precious time taken to run around. And we understand, when you get married, ironically, it's the last thing on your mind!

Yup, making it official often takes a backseat as that hectic settling in period after the marriage starts, and until and unless it is for official purposes like travelling abroad or govt work, most of us do not really care about it immediately. Well, looks like the government has taken notice of that, and now, if you do not register your marriage within 30 days of your 'I do's', you're liable to be fined!
Couples who fail to register their marriages within 30 days of the official ceremony, will be fined Rs. 5 on a daily basis, if they fail to provide a reasonable cause. So basically, if you delay that by a year, you will have to cough up nearly 2K! Earlier, this fine was applicable after a period of 60 days from the wedding.
Basically the reason for this to be done is to encourage more people to register their marriage for official records and to eliminate wrong practices like child marriage. But go ahead and do it as soon as you can- since it has to be done in the region where the wedding happened, and better to wrap it up right after the wedding, isn't it?
