That's 'cz they have come a long way from the same old red/golden ones with God photos everywhere and a gazillion names! Wedding cards these days are classy, minimal and elegant! Not starting the process soon enough
So obviously it doesn't make sense to send out your cards 6 months in advance, but you should start the process of drafting the invites at least 3 months before the wedding, or once the venue is booked. That's because they will take some time to get made (approximately 3 weeks) , and that way you're leaving buffer time as well for any mistakes to be rectified. You can also find the best wedding invitation card vendors here.
Not ordering a sample
A lot of couples do not realise this, but you can always get a sample made, especially if you're considering a massive bulk order. There’s a huge variety in price for wedding invitations, and there’s a reason, too. Purchase a sample first so you can see the paper and printing before placing your big order.
Not ordering address tags
Address tags are those cute little things that can go on top of an invite and mention the address of the people. Otherwise you will have to write it on top of cellophane or attach a sticker. Instead, just order address tag- you can even get them printed out.
Getting boxed invites if your guest list is mostly out of town
Couriering boxes is a big pain and no matter how exquisite your boxed invitation is, those courier charges pinch.
Start gathering the addresses
Do not wait for the cards to come to start gathering the addresses- this process should start way in advance, so that once the invites come, you can start addressing them right away- yes, even that takes its own sweet time if you plan on doing that yourself!
Spending way too much on invites
If you're having a budget wedding, then this is one aspect where you can save yourself a lot of money. You can either go digital and print out few invites for near and dear ones or pick simple and classy designs that are way cheaper than a grand wedding card. The invites matter, yes, but not as much as the wedding. Choose your expenses wisely.
Not ordering enough invites, or over-ordering
It's always better to have some extra than lesser! Keep a good estimate of the number of people you want to invite, and then kickstart the process of the invites- not the other way round! Also remember, most of the invitation guys round off the number to a 50 or 100 (say 250 or 300), so you will have to order accordingly. Do not over order, stick to roughly 20-50 cards extra.
Trying to incorporate too many aspects of the wedding into the card
While it's a good idea to stick to a theme- like say modern mughals for a fort wedding, but cramming too much of it also looks cluttered. Remember. less is more- so a simple design or one with your wedding logo (if you have one) is better than trying to fit every aspect of the wedding into the card.
Not cross-checking for typos multiple times
Yup, with designing wedding cards becoming as easy as with the click of a mouse, the fact is, that a lot of us get too excited and carried away! You have to make sure you have proof-read your card atleast 10 times and with a couple of different eyes to make sure that all that's printed has no error or typo. Trust us, that's much easier than what happens after the card gets printed with a mistake!
Using too much colour
Like we said, a theme is always better. While a colourful card looks super happy, going overboard with it might result in looking tacky. Do not get carried away with colour. Always balance bright colours with something neutral, and make sure the text is visible.
Choosing or designing cards that are too heavy
Yep, sending them becomes a problem. You might be sending your card with some goodies to near and dear ones- but imagine sending heavy cards through courier- just adds to the burden! You can choose cards that are pretty, but light-weight. This will especially work well for a budget wedding- you will save a ton on courier charges!
Who knew so much could go wrong with invites as well, right?
