#DIYLehengas: How To Create Your Own Mix & Match Lehenga!
|
|
Every bride is right now worried about these two things. The main one is "How the hell did Beiber and Selena get together AGAIN?" and the second, how to make my lehenga unique. We don't have answers to the Beiber- Gomez situation but lehengas we know. And we found a few ideas that can make your lehenga completely your own bespoke making.
Thaan at Ekaya

What most brides don't know is that the Benarasi label Ekaya also sells fabric and it's called the Ekaya Thaan. The house showcases some really cool, exquisite heritage fabrics from Benaras and other parts of India - from silver and gold weaves so you can pick and choose your colour and match it up. That way, you can truly have a bespoke experience. Other places where you can pick up great fabric: Manish Market in Mumbai or Glanz in Bandra. Exhibitions like Pause For a Cause also come with handloom fabrics that can be bought off in metres so you're sorted.
Blouse from Sabya / Anita Dongre
Yes, big labels so sell smaller stuff but you got to ask. If you hate the usual designs or want a truly new piece - it's best to find lehenga fabric but never compromise on the blouse. It needs to be fitted and perfect and with lots of embroideries. We saw some really cool blouses at Anita Dongre and why not, it's cool to mix and match.
Pick up borders

In Mumbai, Manish Market and in Delhi, Lajpat Nagar come loaded with borders of every kind - big, small, embellished, everything. Here's a handy guide on which borders to pick up for your height.
Dupattas from online / handloom weavers

If you're smart and have gotten a PHD in bridal shopping you know that dupattas are cheaper online. Pick a colour or a design that's unique and use that instead of the usual net lehenga. The more different the dupatta is, the better the look.
Latkans from Bazaar
We love a quirky latkan - and these days, the style is bigger and better. So try to customise it your way - add some zardosi embroidery, maybe a hashtag, or a unique cut-out - whatever it is - make the smaller details your hero - that way you can keep your lehenga devoid of any design but add accessories to make it shine.
Belt from Sabya
We love unique accessories at WMG and as years pass we have only seen one accessory rule the roost - that's this Sabaysachi belt with the Bengal tiger or the zardosi one wit tassles. It's stable, very unique and takes your lehenga from day to night - so invest in something like this and you'll never regret it.
Go crazy with matching your fabric to embroidery

You know, that's where you'll really make your lehenga shine. I had a friend who mixed satin with bead work and net with Benarasi - she used different fabrics and worked on amazing design and embroidery just to surprise herself and it worked!!!!
Use your mom/granny's old sari
This one's a winner we feel. Pretty sure your mom or your granny had their own bridal buys that you can mix and match and create a more contemporary silhouette. There are so many designers / tailors who would be happy to make a newer drape for you out of it so you can even preserve it. What say?
