A Contemporary & Unorthodox Wedding Devoid Of A Nikah Or Pheras

This wedding is pathbreaking in so many ways, and possibly one of the most unique ones we have featured!

Vedika Mohan, Creative Director of @theweddingdesigncompany, and Omair Warsi, founder of the clothing label @zazu.in, tied the knot recently. They celebrated their unconventional interfaith union, breaking away from customary rituals. The wedding was unorthodox, without any traditional stereotypes, while still retaining the essence of a wedding. An extremely original viewpoint on celebration, love, and being together.

Their journey into matrimony beautifully unfolded in two distinctive yet harmonious chapters- one in a simpler 'ghar ki shaadi' and Court Wedding, capturing the essence of their simple and soulful connection, the other being a two-day retreat with close ones at Suryagarh Jaisalmer. The wedding, meticulously curated by the bride's own The Wedding Design Company, unfolds as a tale of simplicity, cultural reverence, and conscious celebration.

Dhol Night

The celebration of this ‘Ghar ki Shaadi’ began with a lavish dhol night, embracing traditional royal luxury. Their home was adorned with an abundance of marigold flowers, candles, and opulent velvets featuring intricate gota work. Vedika adorned a stunning burgundy embellished pants and blouse set paired with a scallop-shaped cape designed by Sureena Chowdhri, while Omair dazzled in a black mirror work Kurta Pyjama set by Abha Batra.

Court Wedding & Lunch Party

Their Court Wedding and subsequent Lunch Party at home epitomized the beauty of embracing core values and celebrating love in its purest form. Vedika, paying homage to her North Indian heritage, wore her mother’s restored wedding dupatta worn as an odhni, matched with a gold saree. She also wore sentimental heirloom pieces- her mother's wedding jewellery, her grandmother's and great-grandmother's bangles and cuffs, layering the cross-cultural ceremony with profound meaning.

Reception

The Delhi reception, embraced a departure from traditional Indian wedding customs. The afternoon unfolded as a delightful meet-and-greet, inspired by the Chintz story. The decor wove a narrative of print on print meeting modern India- quintessential Rajasthani tents with custom hand-painted prints, and a fresh colour palette of teal, lime green, and accents of lilac. Vedika wore a custom silver corset paired with a lilac hand-embroidered cape and pearl embellished pants by Anamika Khanna and the perfect fresh flower-like makeup by Namrata Soni. She was complemented beautifully by her groom, Omair, donning a custom outfit by Abha Batra.

Suryagarh Wedding

The lively kaleidoscope-themed lunch at Suryagarh was an event to behold, with vibrant block prints in bright pinks and greens. Guests were gifted customised pocket squares from Omair's label Zazu, and custom bride and groom word-search games placed on the table kept them entertained. Opting out of wearing a chooda, Vedika wore bespoke Kaleere, adorned with elements from the couple's wedding logo.

Wedding Vows & After-Party

The final night of celebrations arrived with the grand finale- The Wedding Vows and the subsequent after-party. Dessert Glow was the theme of the night. Crisp Chikankari linen complemented the elegance, with wheat installations as focal points. Vedika defied traditional Indian bridal norms by choosing a non- lehenga ensemble, stealing the spotlight in a breathtaking lengthy veil that showcased the couple's initials, VOW.

From The Bride

Our marriage was a celebration of our unique bond, devoid of traditional constraints. We consciously chose to forego religious rituals, opting instead for a fusion that reflected the both of us as individuals and more so as a couple. Our families embraced this decision wholeheartedly. Rather than adhering to conventional norms, we curated a wedding that encapsulated joy, authenticity and our relationship in its purest form. From tying kaleeras but not wearing a chooda to nearly a 4 hour long baraat but no pheras or nikah, instead we exchanged vows as that was our moment of serenity and our binding factor for all the celebrations. It was our version of a declaration of love. We crafted memorable moments that resonated with us and we wanted to share all this with a close knit group of family and friends like family.
