A Calcutta Wedding with a long distance love story: Ishana & Abhijay

BY The WMG Bride | 09 May, 2014 | 4799 views | 5 min read

This love story involves 2 bottles of rose, a tapas restaurant some paneer tikka, a lot of high fives and a gorgeous Calcutta wedding  ;) We are suckers for a good, real life love story to end the week and this couple just made our day- knowing each other for a grand total of 4.5 months in a long distance relationship spanning 2 countries, speaking to each other maybe 5 minutes a day, and yet deciding to spend the rest of their lives together. Shot by the talented Delhi based duo of Bhumi & Simran, this wedding is one big party! pre-wedding (2)-001

Meet Ishana & Abhijay

Kolkata boy Abhijay  was in New York for a summer internship, and Delhi girl Ishana was working there. They met through a common friend, and according to Ishana the minute she saw this tall guy in a suit "A karan johar movie" played out in her head. That Karan Johar movie actually started to unfold in reality as this 'tall guy' came up to her saying "You must be Ishana, I've heard so much about you". While keeping her cool game on from the outside , she was obviously secretly thrilled on the inside. Within 2 weeks of knowing each other Abhijay asked Ishana out and  after two bottles of rose-  Ishana's response to the proposal- a high five !! She had just acquired a boyfriend who would be moving  to Hong Kong in a couple of weeks ! Well he did move to Hong Kong and they managed to squeeze in 5 minute conversations every day for about 4 months till she visited him in Calcutta and he came to Delhi . Ishana recounts " 72 hours later, while in Calcutta he had the epiphany that this long distance would end if I moved to Hong Kong and the only way to get me to do that was to put a ring on it, and why wait when you know its the right person. So at 23 years of age, 6 months out of college and 4.5 months after knowing me long distance he asked me to marry him over paneer tikka"

Ishana, that is definitely one of the cutest stories we have heard. How involved were you in the planning of the wedding? When I first got engaged I thought I would be very heavily involved in the planning given that I had known exactly what kind of wedding I wanted since I was 6 but given that I was in New York and the wedding was in Calcutta I was not a very hands on bride. Also, luckily for me my mom and mom in law are amazing and took care of everything - they also got along really well which helped in coming up with the vision of the wedding and executing against it. For example, my wedding card that my mom designed - I don't think I could have done a better job of it myself, in fact I dont think anyone in this world could have done a better job. Similarly - the menu and the food that my mom  in law came up with again was so outside of the box and classy that I know all the guests are still talking about it. Any favourite function that was the highlight? My favorite was the Mehndi - it was a day time event with mimosas and bellinis. The decor was gorgeous - simple gendha umbrellas everywhere and the weather was perfect! We had McSid perform - he was fabulous and so inclusive of all our family and friends and the highlight of this entire event was a dance performance by my brother - he really represented the Punjabi in me! Overall it was the most chilled out and relaxed event and everyone had a great time! I enjoyed our wedding thoroughly - every minute of it and thanks to Bhumi and Simran I will get to enjoy our wedding for the rest of my life. Our entire family was part of it - they made sure of it. They blew our mind away - not just with the pictures and the end product but with the experience all together. Thanks to them we will relive each moment of the wedding every time we open that coffee table book they made us.
Whats your personal style like? Did you have a clear vision of the kind of bride you wanted to be?
Old time India, Sabya described it well "I wanted us to look like old nawabs, like Sharmila and Pataudi". I did not want anything bling and shiny but I wanted something that would bring out my personality - I grew up in 5 different countries but at heart, in the way I lead my life and in the decisions I make I am very traditionally Indian and I wanted that combination of traditional yet open minded, fun, independent and strong willed to come out in each of my outfits. I wanted to look like Jodha.
